Can't send mail but can receive

I get this error every time I send an email -
connection to the server has
failed. Subject 'You're invited to view my photos!', Account:
'pop.east.cox.net', Server: 'smtp.east.cox.net', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25,
Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

I can receive mail ok. Just can't send.

Are you sending from your home Cox connection, or are you
away from home?

Which antivirus are you running?

Many ISPs are bloking port 25, the standard port for SMTP.

you can tell by using Telnet to test port 25

If you're at home try asking your ISP to unblock port 25 for you, or if
you are in another location, you may use webmail.

Most ISPs allow the use of port 25 to reach their own outgoing mail
server, but many block any other use of port 25.

Gary, I am having the same problem when away from home on a WiFi hotel
connection. Receive everything, but send nothing. Does this mean that I will
have to send all E's using webmail. A realpain if I want to Reply to an E.

It seems that your ISP is blocking all emails being sent on the SMTP TCP
port 25 that's coming from a computer that in not on its network to reduce
the sending of SPAM.

I use Earthlink that is nationwide in the US, and I know I can access EL
when not in the US, which uses TCP port 587 for SMTP. I can access EL on a
BB or a local dial-up connection. I am in a hotel right now on wireless and
I have no problems sending email or receiving email with Windows Mail.

An EL account cost about $15 a month when I got it.

Besides webmail, there are two other solutions for the traveler.

1. Ask your mail provider if they allow SMTP on a port other than 25.
If you tell us who the provider is, we can look that up for you.

2. Get a free Gmail account, and use that for sending while on the road.
Gmail's SMTP uses port 465 which is not blocked.
