Try this first, if still no go, post the entire error message back :
Tools > Accounts > highlight (left click) your account > Advanced. Change '
server port number ' from 25 to 587 > OK

I don't know what is smtp port number for Bellsouth, it could be 25.
My answer given was for Camcast.
However, make sure you have the following done :
Tools > Accounts > highlight your account > Properties > Servers. Under
out-going mail, put a checkmark on " This server requires authentication " >
OK

Why did you change the port number to 587? The other responder's advice
was directed at a different user with a different mail provider.
Please post the error you get with the standard port 25.
Incidentally, don't paraphrase the error message.
Right-click on your error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
Our ability to diagnose the problem is very dependent on seeing a
100% verbatim error message.

That sounds like an error message from Microsoft Outlook,
which is covered in a different newsgroup.
If you are using the Windows Mail program, right-click on
your error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message.

To avoid confusion, please begin a new thread about your specific problems.
State your IE version and full Windows version (e.g., WinXP SP3; Vista SP2)
in your first post.
