Can't send emails in Vista

Guest

I have 4 messages sitting in my Windows Mail Outbox. When I try to send them
I get a message: "The message could not be sent
An error occurred"

The body of these 4 email messages contains the following error message
instead of the original content.

"Message could not be displayed
Windows Mail encountered an unexpected problem while displaying this
message. Check your computer for low memory or low disk space and try again."

This problem happened right after I cancelled the send/receive operation
before it was complete.

I can't get rid of these messages. I can't delete them. I can't move them
to another folder. I can't do anything with them. Now when I add new
messages to the outbox I can't send them either. The send/receive appears to
execute but it doesn't send either the 4 bad messages or any of the new
messages I have added to the outbox.

Are you using either McAfee or Norton antivirus with the mail scanning
feature enabled? That is the most likely source of the undeletable email
remnants.

The only way to get rid of stuck messages in the Outbox is to delete
both copies of the MessageStore file. Search this newsgroups for
the exact procedure.

Gary,

Thanks. I'll give that a try.

Gary,

I tried copying the msmessagestore file before deleting it. I got a message
that said I couldn't copy it while it was in use by an application. However,
there were no applications running at the time. I'm thinking maybe Vista
thinks there is an application open that isn't really open. Any ideas?

Simultaneously press the Ctrl, Shift and Esc keys. This will
bring up the Task Manager. Under Processes look for
WinMail.exe. End it.

Bob - MS position is to go to the "Windows Mail" folder level and delete that
whole folder so it can be regnerated clean then copy back the inbox & sent
box & accounts & whatever else you wanted saved. I've found working just
with "messagestore" causes other synch. issues.

You need to end the WinMail.exe process as Gary indicates.

Then move the entire contents under the directory to another directory.

Gary, Steve, Trick,

Thanks for your help. That worked. I'm back in business. I very much
appreciate your assistance. Somewhere along the way I read where somebody
suggested Thunderbird email. Is it worth considering switching to that email
handler?

Some people love Thunderbird, some hate it. It's something you
need to try for yourself. I understand it is very slow with IMAP,
but otherwise works well..

I am having the same problem - message stuck in outbox and can't send any
other messages. I have tried deleting the Windows Mail directory but it says
I need permission to do this. Permission from who?? I'm the administrator.
I'm getting so frustrated.
