Someone..........Anyone.............HELP!!!!

I can't see the data that is on CD/DVD's. When I used to put a disk into
the drive, I could go into the "my computer" and open the drive and it would
show me what files were on the disk. I can no longer do that. When I put a
disk in, the box pops up with what option I want to take and I choose"open
folder to view files using windows explorer" but nothing happens. There is
data on the disks and the drive will read the disk, because if I choose view
files with one of the viewer programs, I can see all the pictures on the
disk. I have 2 cd/dvd drives and they both are doing this. The only things
I have added recently was an external hard drive (plugged straight into USB
with no needed disk and iPod/itunes software. Any idea what is causing this
problem? I can write with the drives and play info off of them, but I have
to put them into another computer to view the files. HELP!!!

any recommendations and is this something a beginner could attempt? Thanks!

When you insert data disk - does disk icon change to "cd-rom" and report disk
to have 0 bytes in?
Can you use that USB harddrive?
Can you use audioCDs with MediaPlayer?

JJ,
Yes, the drive recognises when I put a disk in. The icon will change to
what ever I have in there, but when look to see the size of it, it show that
there is nothing on the disk (702 mb avail) even though I know there is.
Yes, the external USB hard drive works fine. Yes, Windows Media Player will
read and play the cd.

When I click on the drive icon and click open, the light on the CPU flashes
like it is processing, but the drive doesn't engage (light up). I click on
play and it starts right up. Strange isn't it??!
