Can't save TT fonts - "general failure"

G

Guest

I'm trying to save a PowerPoint 2003 presentation with TrueType fonts
embedded. I get a "can't save these fonts" message with a "general failure"
designation each time I try to save.

These fonts are installed on my PC just fine, and I can embed them in a Word
document and save them without difficulty.

Help needed -- need to send a document to a client.

There are many variable with fonts and their embedded licensing options,
which it sounds like you are encountering. First, check here for a good
summary of embedding fonts in PPT:
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00076.htm

If additional information is needed post the font name and if possible what
company/collection it is from.

Thanks for the reference and the quick reply. I've read that FAQ and used
Microsoft's font tools to look at the permissioning on these fonts and
theoretically they should be clear for passing and even installing on someone
else's system. And I can in fact embed and ship them in a Word document. It's
just PPT that is giving me problems. I guess it's a "feature" that I can't
get around without changing the fonts.

But you haven't told us which fonts are involved. With that information we can
test some things on our systems and perhaps give you some ideas or suggestions.

Here are two of the problems:

cfgrr.ttf (Clearface Gothic; font vendor: Electronic Font Foundry; "preview
& print embedding allowed" supposedly)
GARA.TTF (Garamond; font vendor: Monotype; "editable embedding allowed"
supposedly)

Thanks for any insight!

Here are two of the problems:

cfgrr.ttf (Clearface Gothic; font vendor: Electronic Font Foundry; "preview
& print embedding allowed" supposedly)
GARA.TTF (Garamond; font vendor: Monotype; "editable embedding allowed"
supposedly)

In theory, neither of these should give you any problems when you save a PPT with
fonts embedded.

The fact that Clearface Gothic is embedded will probably force the resulting PPT to
open in Edit-Only mode in PowerPoint 2003 on a system where the font isn't
installed.

A couple of questions/suggestions:

- Close PPT and restart the computer. Try it again. Sometimes that's all it takes
to cure the really weird ones.

- You're certain that these are the only fonts in the presentation? (Check Format,
Replace Fonts for a list of needed fonts).

- Working on a copy of your presentation, try replacing (via the Replace fonts
Dialog above) each of these fonts with a different one, say Arial, to see if the
file will then save happily. Perhaps one of the fonts is damaged.

- Before doing that, try viewing the fonts in question in Character Map. Make sure
that you don't see any weirdness there (which might indicated a damaged font)

- What's the *exact* text of the error message?

SORRY, DIDN'T HELP

THAT DOESN'T SEEM TO BE THE PROBLEM. I CAN CREATE A NEW PRESENTATION JUST
USING CLEARFACE GOTHIC OR GARAMOND, FOR EXAMPLE -- EVEN A SINGLE WORD/SINGLE
FONT POWERPOINT -- AND IT WON'T EMBED THE FONT WHEN SAVING.
- Working on a copy of your presentation, try replacing (via the Replace fonts
Dialog above) each of these fonts with a different one, say Arial, to see if the

IT WILL EMBED ARIAL IF I REPLACE CLEARFACE WITH ARIAL. BUT IT WON'T (FOR
EXAMPLE) EMBED VERDANA IF I REPLACE CLEARFACE WITH VERDANA. SO THERE ARE MANY
FONTS THAT ARE CAUSING THIS PROBLEM, INCLUDING VERDANA.
- Before doing that, try viewing the fonts in question in Character Map. Make sure

DOESN'T LOOK BAD THERE.
- What's the *exact* text of the error message?

"SOME OF YOUR FONTS CANNOT BE SAVED WITH THE PRESENTATION.
[LIST HEADINGS: CANNOT BE SAVED: / REASON:)
Clearface Gothic -- Reason: General Failure"

You mentioned that you have the MS Typography extension that lets you see all the font
properties, didn't you? If that's correct, have a look at the properties of this font
vs one that you can successfully embed.
