Can't save to My Web Sites

L

Lawrence Beyer

I'm new and I can't even get started. When I try to save to My Web Sites
I get the following:
Server error: The server extensions were unable to access the file
"C:\Documents and Settings\Lawrence Beyer.LAWRENCE-OZSFPK
\My Documents\My Web Sites\_vti_pvt\service.lck" Please check
the file permissions.

It's just me, one computer with Windows XP, no password.
Any help greatly appreciated.

Did you by any chance transfer any of your web files from a cd to your
computer?

I have never transferred anything. I installed Windows XP (home edition)
from a CD, way back. Recently I installed MS FrontPage 2003 from a CD.
Then I installed MS FrontPage 2003 Step by Step practice files from a CD.
Immediately I couldn't save to My Web Sites. I went through the entire Step
by Step book. I got around the problem by saving to My Documents and
dragging to My Web Sites. I can open the folders in My Web Sites, but I
can't save to My Web Sites. After I finished Step by Step, I uninstalled the
practice files. Everything uninstalled except what I dragged to My Web
Sites.
I left them there. Wanting to make sure my MS FrontPage 2003 was OK, I
unnstalled it, and reinstalled it from the CD. Still can't save to My Web
Sites.

find that folder with windows explorer, right click it and uncheck the "read
only" box. it'll ask you if you want to do this to all folders within,
select yes.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

But it wasn't that easy.

The "service.lck" wasn't checked.
The "_vti_pvt" and "My Web Sites" were checked.
Unchecking them, applying, YES to all folders,
then OK, seemed to do nothing, because when I
looked again, they were checked again. The APPLY
just didn't take. I tried several times, but every time I
went back they were still checked. Finally I unchecked
them again (didn't look back), closed everything,
restarted my computer, and OK, OK, OK! Now I
can Save to My Web Sites.

How did they get checked in the first place?
Why isn't this covered in FrontPage literature?

You are wonderfu!!! This allowed me to go a couple more steps. Now I get
another error which states:
The character set " for teh source web 'C:\Documents and Settings\ ...\My
Webs' is not supported on the desitnation web server 'ftp://myftpxxxxsite.com
' No files were published. To change the character set for the current open
web, choose Web Settings on the Tools menu.

What exactly does this mean?

Thanks for your help!

And when you follow the instructions what character set is showing in Tools Web Settings language?
Set it to English & Western Europe (or what ever your host supports)
