Can't save as a movie file

OK, I am pretty adept at WMM. I got a newer computer to be able to handle the
requirements of video editing etc. However, after a few months of success
(also having converted analog to digital and edited it, movie maker will no
longer allow me to save my projects (long OR short--and I mean even 2 minutes
here) as an AVI-DV file. I refuse to save as anything else as I want to keep
the quality (especially of my DV stuff). I have spent HOURS with MS support
and am on level 3 at present but STILL they cannot figure out the problem.
When I save as AVI-DV, it starts to save and the minutes count down, but then
they stop and begin to count up to infinity if I'd let them. HELP!!! The
whole reason I bought this new computer was so I could do these videos of
family footage to give as Christmas presents. PLEASE help! Mr. Inzer---I've
seen a lot of your replies and hope you have some ideas. And yes, I have
Explorer 7 but have always had it on this machine even when MMaker was
working fine.

Is your newer computer running WinXP
or Vista?

Have you tried doing a system restore to
a time before the issue began?

It may help if we had some idea of what
you tried already.

You name it; I've tried it. I could make +1 hour movies before...now I'm
lucky if I can get it to save a 1:20 clip in movie mode. It all focuses on
the DVI-AV setting. Any other setting is fine...but then the quality is
garbage. About the only thing I have NOT tried is cleaning out my
computer/wiping everything out and reloading...I simply have too much stuff
that it would take DAYS to save to DVD as backup. I have plenty of space
+156G, a very high speed processor, a video card specific for doing just
this, etc. I have some video on this computer that is no where else and I
guess that is my main reason for not wanting to wipe it all out to try on a
clean computer. I've tried the windowsmoviemaker forum and tried things
they've recommended...removing excess footage from the collection, etc.

Ok, just tried to restore system to a time before the problem...perhaps if
someone had suggested that before (say Microsoft???) but it now will not let
me go back any further than August--which is when the problem started. My
contacts with MS date to 8-6-07. So, again, I'm stuck.

Based on the info you provide...it sounds
like you have tried everything already.

As for a backup of your files...you might
consider installing a second hard drive.
It beats using a whole box of DVDs.
