Uncooked meat prior to state vector collapse

Running Windows XP, all updates. 40GB C:\ Drive single partition. I get this
message when trying to run scandisk

"Windows was unable to complete the disk check"

Also happens in safemode. Reason I wanted to run scandisk was because the
defrag util would not defrag, instead giving me this message during analyze

"Defragmentation of (C:) has been aborted due to inconsistencies that were
detected in the filesystem. Please run CHKDSK or SCANDISK on (C:) to repair
these inconsistencies, then run Disk Defragmenter again."

Any suggestions before I reformat?

I dont know if it is related or not, but recently I have been getting a BSOD
which displays NO text (just blue screen) about once a day or so, and ONLY
when the computer is idle and not in use. My previous experiences with BSOD
is opposite, which is to say that normally I see some sort of error log on
the screen and BSOD's tend to happen when the system is booted or programs
are loaded.

I though that scandisk does not exist in XP (or NT or Win2k).

From a command line, run

chkdsk /f c:

It won't actually run until you reboot.

excuse my old world vocabulary, the scandisk I refer to is just the error
checking util in the drive properties, whatever it's called :)

Your suggestion worked and some orphan was deleted and all is good now! Very
much appreciated Bob!

Your file system on the harddrive sounds like it's corrupt. About the only
thing to do in this case is try to reformat it and do a clean install of XP.
