defragmenting problem

Recently, I tried to defrag my system (I routinely do this) since it had been
a long time since I've done this. When I click on "analyze" for the C:
drive, I instantly get the error message "Defragmentation of C: has been
aborted due to inconsistencies that were detected in the filesystem. Please
run CHKDSK or SCANDISK on (C:) to repair these inconsistenceis, then run Disk
Defragmentar again.". Can anyone please tell me what the heck to do with
this? I truly am at a loss and don't know if there's something wrong with my
system or not. I'd appriciate any help. Thanks.

You need to run ScanDisk to check the HD for errors. Open My Computer,
right click on the drive you want to defragment, and click on
Properties. Click on the Tools tab. Under Error Checking, click Check
Now.

Open MyComputer, right click on the C: drive icon and select
Properties, click on the Tools tab and select error checking.

There isn't a scandisk tool in XP, Gerry.

Scandisk.exe is part of Windows 95/98/ME, etc. Basically, non-NT Windows
versions and with MS-DOS.

People that are new to XP erroneously refer to chkdsk as scandisk.
