Can't Repair IE6 SP1

When I try to repair IE6 SP1, I get "IE cannot be repair, run setup again
then re-install"
In Details, the following, "Error occurs while setting up
C:\Windows\System\shdocvw.dll". This error has been logged. The install will
continue ( referring to my re-install of Win 98 over the current
installation).
How can I un-install IE6, revert to IE4 on Win 98, then perform a clean
re-install of IE6 SP1. I have been able to accomplish this previously, but
that option is now grey out. Firefox 1.0 is my default browser, but I want a
clean IE6 if a website or program requires it. I am not of the computer
generation so please make your reply easy to follow. Thanks.

Are you trying to reinstall Win98 or repair/reinstall IE6? I'm confused.

How to Remove Internet Explorer 6 or Outlook Explorer 6 by Reinstalling
Windows
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=312451

If you're not reinstalling Windows, IE6 may be overinstalled in Win98:

First, close *everything* via CTRL+ALT+DEL except Windows Explorer (includes
your AV program, Scheduled Tasks, Screensaver, and going offline).
Start>Run>IE6Setup.exe. Select Minimal - Custom; Select all the parts you
use, including OE (but none you didn't originally download) and overinstall.
Should take about 2 minutes. Reboot the computer.

Now, with AV and all other running processes still closed, check in at
Windows Update for additional updates and patches you may need.

Thanks for your reply. I was re-installing Win98 over the existing
installation to replace a couple of files. That's when I got the
"shdocvw.dll" error + logging the error + continuing to install. However,
this error shows up as the reason I cannot either repair, revert back IE6.
(My Win updates are current.) So, I guess the initial "shdocvw.dll" error
somehow corrupts the A/R functions of IE6. The information in the Microsoft
article is too confusing for me so I will try your fix. I will report back.
Thanks.

Thanks. My config.sys + autoexec.bat files were missing. I just attempted
your solution. The problem persists. I suspect that IE6 probably works
better with Win XP. Also the IE6 titlebar says this new install came from
AOL, THE PITS!! Cannot repair or revert. Frustrating, aggravating, but its
Microsoft!! For my occasional use of IE6, this corrupt version seems to
work. I won't tempt fate!! Firefox is so much better, faster, rarely
crashes, tab browsing is great, the user can also customize with many
extensions including opening a Firefox page in IE6. I urge everyone here to
change to Firefox, a major revelation in browsing. (ITS FREE!!) Great for
non-computer generation types like me. Again, thanks for your help.

We'd need the complete error messages (and what you'd been doing which led
up to them) before even beginning to know how to assist you.

Thanks. I gave you the complete error message in my original request. Here
it is again.

The cannot install or setup shdocvw.dll error came when re-installing Win 98
over current installation. This appears to be a repeat error when trying to
un-install IE6.This is all I know. Thanks.
