After having trouble with printing from a W98 pc, via
my wireless network, on my HP 840C printer hooked
up to my brandnew WXP pc, I de-installed the printer
(which was fine before), as well as two other
virtual (?) printers shown on the 'printers and faxes'
menu. Installation of new HP XP drivers fail.
Clicking on 'add printer' results in an immediate
'operation can't be completed' window.

Did I ruin something?

Is the print spooler running?

From the command prompt, type

net start spooler

If this doesn't produce any change, from the command prompt, type

sfc /scannow

(noting the space between the c and the /) and after it's finished, reboot.
Then try to reinstall again.
