Cant play EXPERT POOL game in XP

O

obrtnica

I just figured out that I can't play PSYGNOSIS's game EXPERT POOL in
XP.

When starts to run it just goes to black screen and then nothing
happens.

I am sure that once before I have seen this game that runed just fine
in XP.

I now it is running in DOS I think. Is there any patch for this or some
kind of software console maybe to try. Or can I change some settings in
XP to make this work.

Thanks in advance.

Hi [email protected],

Try installing and playing that using 95/98 Compatibility mode.

To install a program using Windows XP's Compatibility Mode, hold
down SHIFT as you insert the game CD, use My Computer to browse
to the setup program, and then skip down to step 1 in the list below:

To run an installed program using Windows XP's Compatibility Mode,
first right click the program and "Send To..." / Desktop (create shortcut).

1.. Right click on the shortcut to the program.
2.. Click on Properties.
3.. Click on the Compatibility tab.
4.. Click on Run this program in compatibility mode and select one of these:
a.. Windows 95
b.. Windows 98
c.. Windows NT 4
d.. Windows 2000
5.. Under Display settings, check mark the mode that you think that is best:
a.. Run in 256 colors.
b.. Run in 640 X 480 screen resolution.
c.. Disable visual themes.

Click on Apply.Click on Ok.Double click on the program.

Of course, let's not forget to check for any patches or updates for that game.
A good place to find them is: www.avault.com/pcrl/patches_list.asp?letter=a

If you'd like to learn more information about compatibility mode, you can click the
link in the Compatibility tab that reads "Learn more about program compatibility",
or watch this Application Compatibility Power Point Presentation:

Hi [email protected],

Try installing and playing that using 95/98 Compatibility mode.

Dear Jimmy.

After few hours of playing with the options none of the suggestions
didn't work.

But at the end finaly I've found a solution.

This is what have made a trick for me.

In the CONTROL PANEL and in the SOUND AND AUDIO DEVICES I had to
disable my default sound card which is SOUND BLASTER 24bit LIVE.

Then I have enabled my virtual CAPTURE audio driver for TOTAL RECORDER
(from HIGH CRITERIA).

After that everything works now without a problem and I don't have to
enable any compatibility mode.

Hope this trick will help other users too.

Best regards.

Hi Obrtnica,

That's great news. Seems a lot of folks are having sudden issues
with their sound drivers. Looks like something for us to investigate.

Hi Obrtnica,

Dear Jimmy.

I have found even better solution.

Uninstall TOTAL RECORDER (From Hight Criteria) capture driver
completly. After that operation default sound card work perfectly with
the game.

So one solution is to set TOTAL RECORDER as a default sound card
driver but then there are some anomalies with the sound.

Perfect solution is to remove-uninstall TOTAL RECORDER driver
completly.

After that no problematic issues with the game.

So users should always check do they have more sound cards installed
(for example on board sound card or PCI sound card) or is there maybe
some kind of secundary capture driver (like TOTAL RECORDED) that is
messing up the system for DOS GAMES.

Best regards.
