Can't ping remote servers except over VPN

I have a couple XP Pro users on the network who can't ping or connect
to remote servers. The weird part is if they log into the network then
also log in using VPN they can ping and connect to them just fine.
There is nothing between them and the remote servers (meaning no
firewall). Their WinXP firewalls are turned off. I recently upgraded
our corporate anti-virus and thought that might be causing the problem
but I disabled it (Norton Corporate v.10.0.2) and it still doesn't
work. They're the only two on the network having this problem and I
can't figure out why. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Are the two problem computers using only domain DNS servers on the network?
