Can't ping machine acting as VPN server when connected to it

David Hooker

When I connect to a remote site, I can ping other machines on the
remote network, but I can't ping the machine I am connecting to as a
VPN client.

For example:
My address on the remote network: 10.0.0.80 (static)
Address of machine acting as VPN server on remote network: 10.0.0.20
Address of another machine on the remote network: 10.0.0.21

When VPNed in, I can ping 10.0.0.21, and when I running as a Remote
Desktop user on 10.0.0.21 I can ping 10.0.0.20 -- but I can't ping
10.0.0.20 from my own machine.

These machines are running WinXP firewall.

Thanks in advance.

I am a novice at this stuff and this suggestion may be way too pedestrian.
However, I have found that the VPN adapter on the host machine creates two
new IP addresses when an incoming request connects - one for itself and the
other for the incoming client. I have also found that I can access the host
computer through the adapter IP but not through the host machine's internal
network IP. The VPN host IP should be available by right-clicking on the
connected client VPN adapter, selecting "status" and then the support tab.
Try pinging that IP instead.
