can't ping default gateway???

I wonder if you could help me. I'm trying to network an
XP computer with a W98 via ethernet cards and crossover
cable. XP has 192.168.0.1 255.255.255.0 W98 is
192.168.0.2 255.255.255.0 No default gateway is set.
No firewalls are on.

both computers can see each other but can't access each
other. data is being sent and recieved over network

can use ipconfig to confirm IPs and arp -a to see
other computers IP

can ping own ip and loopback but can't ping other
computer (time out)

do I need to set a default gateway on both computers? If
so what would I use as the gateway?

Any suggestions?

A default gateway is only needed for Internet access. It has nothing
to do with getting your computers to see each other.

Double check that there are no firewalls. Some Internet security and
antivirus programs have firewall functions that aren't immediately
obvious. Make sure that XP's Internet Connection Firewall is disabled
on the local area network connection.

Remove all protocols other than TCP/IP.

If those tips don't help, please reply to this message in the news
group (not by E-mail) with more information to help other people
understand the problem. For example:

How are you trying to access one computer from the other? What
exactly happens when you do it? What does the error message say?
