Can't open Windows Explorer

J

John

All of a sudden, every time I try to open a folder I am getting the dialog
"Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close..." Rebooting
doesn't help and I am not aware of having made any changes to my system
recently other than re-enabling a couple disabled IE7 add-ins.

I'm running WinXP Pro w/ all updates installed.

I appreciate your help, -John

Downloaded and ran, but still get WE error. When I click the "more info"
link in the error dialog box it shows Error Signature:
AppName: explorer.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.5512 ModName: hpswp_bho.dll
ModVer: 112.200.19110.0 Offset: 00043877
Turns out hpswp is one of the BHOs I had reenabled. It is associated with HP
Smart Web Printing browser utility that is supposed to help me save web page
content w/o printing everything. Guess I'll uninstall it, it is a piece of
junk.

Thx for your help.

How badly am I in trouble?

I did download his shellfix.bat and after looking at it and determining that
it appears to just register a bunch of dlls, did run the routine. It didn't
fix the problem.

Should I do something to undo what this thing did?

It turns out that my problem was caused by an HP web print BHO called
hpswp.dll that I had just enabled.

Thx for your help, John

It is difficult to say. The guy is a fraud as you will see from another
thread in this newsgroup. He is like the Wild West Travelling Medicine
Man. The label on the bottle changes to suit the cure being offered.

I would move on but take care in future not to accept a cure all offered
so readily.

Hope this helps.

You are not in trouble at all, you seen exactly what that file does. Don't
believe the bad stuff you read about me those idiots didn't know you were
smart enough to look at the file before you ran it and they would rather
steer you in the wrong direction rather then get help from me. BTW HP has an
update to that web browser printing issue.

Try to reproduce the same error and when it appears, "click here " blue link

I am having a similar problem with XP home.
I receive the "Windows explorer has encountered a problem and needs to
close..." error right after logging on.
if I run sfc.exe /scannow it will fix the problem but only until windows
updates.
If I install KB967715 I get the error again.
It appears 967715 copies a new shell32.dll (6.00.2900.5622) that this system
does not like
If I copy the old version of shell32.dll (6.00.2900.5512) back the system
works again.
But then Microsoft update wants to reinstall 967715. I am hesitant to give
this back to the user as they may install an update and toast the system
again.

Most of my dlls are version 6.00.2900.5512 kernel32.dll, ntdll.dll user32 etc.

This system is XP home sp3 ie 7 with very little running at startup and
virus clean.
The problem occurs in regular and safe mode

Does anyone have any ideas how to permanently stop this error?

Please and Thanks
Rob
