I'm trying to install hp officejet 600 printer software. When I try to
run it from cd or click on the setup file directly, there is an error
sound but no message.

I have Xp pro sp2.

Thanks

check the event viewer,
Start>admin tools>event viewer..Look in applications and system for red
errors.

There are no red errors. there are a couple warnings I don't think are
part of it, but in case -

okay, boot into safe mode and once there stop or shutdown all of your anti
virus programs, firewalls, etc, then try to install the software from there.

Ok, I tried that and same behavior. I also tried installing it with add
printer and add hardware but that didnt work either. I wrote HP and
they said it was probably an issue with the disk itself, but it is in
perfect condition and I know it worked for the people I got the printer
from.
Anyway, thanks very much for your help.

When you tried the Add New Printer/add new hardware..what was the end
result, other than it didn't work..was there any kind of explanation, like
'cannot install this hardware' The message would have been contained right
in the same Add New, or Found New hardware wizard box.

Did you get a manual with the printer?
I ask because with mine, different brand, but the steps to install were very
specific..it wasn't just a matter of putting the disk in and installing.

It said the required section was not found in the inf. I found that
error message on the hp site and did the steps, but got a message
saying the hardware device could not be installed.
The manual says to install the software with the disk.
My kid just tried to install printshop and that exe file wouldnt open
either!
