Can't Open Pictures in My Pictures

Guest

I have 4,500+ pictures in My Pictures. When I open it and choose a file it
says,
"No Preview Available."
When I place the cursor over the Picture Logo it says,
"Type Jpeg Image, Size: 186kb" (or whatever other size)
The files must be there if the computer gives me this information.
And this is the same for all 4,500 pictures...something that I would clearly
hate to lose, a lifetime of photos.
Does anyone out there know how to get those files to open?
Thanks,

Make sure that the Windows and Fax Viewer is associated with the picture
files.

Right click a .jpg or other file, click Properties.
On the general tab if Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is not listed next to
Opens with, click the Change button.
Windows Picture and Fax Viewer should be listed in the Programs list, select
it and OK your way back out.

Visit here...
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Read the instructions at the top
Scroll down to
80. Disable or Restore Picture and Fax Viewer
Click on Restore

pictureandfaxrestore.reg is the file that you want.

And try this...

Click Start | Click Run | Paste: regsvr32 shimgvw.dll | Click OK

If that doesn't work, make sure Preview default is set correctly.

When you open an image file in Windows XP the default action is to preview
it using the Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\image\ShellEx\ContextMenuHandlers\
ShellImagePreview
Value Name: (Default)
Value Type: REG_SZ
Value Data: {e84fda7c-1d6a-45f6-b725-cb260c236066}

Also if that doesn't work...
[[Installing a third-party image editor or viewer applications may sometimes
hijack the image file associations. In those cases, this utility allows you
repair the file associations for the following image file types to Windows
XP defaults:

BMP DIB EMF GIF JFIF JPG JPE JPEG PNG TIF TIFF WMF ]]

Your use of the phrase "something that I would clearly hate to loose, a
lifetime of photos", is a concern. Don't you have a backup of those
valuable photos? There should always be a full and complete backup of
important data. I recommend putting the backups on an external hard drive.
You can get one preassembled, prices are dropping, or put on together
yourself from a bare drive an an external drive enclosure.

I recommend using a drive imaging program such as Acronis True Image Home,
version 10 to image the drive to this external hard drive.

Backing up should be the first thing you do at this point.

Thanks Mikeyhsd. As a matter of fact I do have most of them backed up. Just
the later ones, maybe a hundred pics that I hadn't backed up yet. I've tried
the advice that the others gave me but doesn't seem to do the job.
I wonder why all of My Pics are "not availabe" even though the info that
shows how big they are is there. And why only My Pics? No other files in My
Docs, etc are affected?
Any ideas?

Can you copy a picture file from the 'My Pictures' folder to another folder,
and if so is the picture now visible/viewable in the new folder?

Hi JS,
You got my hopes up on that suggestion to copy and paste in another
folder...something that I hadn't tried. So I just tried it...too
bad...didn't work.
Wesley Vogel had some good ideas but didn't go step by step through the
whole process and dumb me got lost somewherfe in the middle.
I'm about ready to give up. I contacted the computer manufacturer but they
want 60 bucks to fix it...with no garantees...and so it goes.
Thanks mil for your interest.

have you tried a different program to access the pictures.

there are several pretty good viewers available that also have the ability to move/copy pictures.
ifranview is one that comes to mind.

Was it the copy operation that did not work or after the file was copied and
the copy was visible (in the new folder) using Explorer that you still could
not view the picture using 'irfanview' or any other photo viewer/editor?

I don't think that he is comprehending what in involved. IF he would TRY to open the file with Irfanview, IT would tell him if it was openable or if it had an incorrect extension or whatever. Somehow, I think something got clobbered by gawd knows what. I could probably solve it in a minute IF I was in control of his 'puter.
