What is a .EML file?

H

homeowner

Someone emailed me a bunch of pictures, for example, a christmas card
with a few lines of text and a lot of cartoonish pictures. I received
it using Thunderbird. If I try to save it, it's saved as a .EML file,
such as christmascard.eml.

The file is saved, and is fairly large in size, which indicates that it
contains the pictures. However, clicking on it tells me to select a
program to open it. I have no idea what program is supposed to open it.
Does anyone know?

I want to save it, and while I could save each picture separately, I'd
lose the text. I'd actually rather save it as a .HTML file so any web
browser could open it, but that's not an option.

Anyone know what or how to deal with this?

Thanks

EML files are the type of e-mail files used by Outlook Express, Windows Mail
and Windows Live Mail. If you click File | Save As and save it as a .eml
file, will that open in TBird? It would open in Outlook Express even if it
is not the e-mail client you are using.

You could also try this freeware program.

a .EML file, such as christmascard.eml.

An EML file is the raw email message, and is in plain text. Any
pictures will be encoded to text - one of Thunderbird's jobs is to
decode it back to a binary picture file. Let it do its job. Save the
attached pictures from Thunderbird to your hard disk.
The file is saved, and is fairly large in size, which indicates
that it contains the pictures. However, clicking on it tells me

Thunderbird itself can open it, since EML is its preferred format. So
can Outlook Express, and most other email programs.

I don't think there's any easy way to do that. You need to save the
pictures and text separately.

EML is HTML file to be open with your E-Mail Brower...

You can change the file extension of an .eml file to .mht, and it will
open in a web browser.

And so it does! (IE, anyway - Firefox doesn't seem to know what to do
with it.) Cool!

!?!

An EML file is the raw email message data. It is simple text. It's not
an HTML file, and it doesn't necessarily contain HTML markup (though it
sometimes does.)

Well, by golly, that works, but only works in Opera. It would not open
in Firefox or K-meleon (both mozilla browsers). Actually, it opened but
was all random alphabetical letters (text) but no pictures. It also
opened as a file using Thunderbird. All the original material was
preserved, excerpt the headers (sender and to whom it was sent). I
didnt know that could be done.

I dont have IE or OE installed. I never cared for either.

But it works and can be read, so that is what matters.

By the way, what does MHT stand for?

Thanks to all.

I don't know what method you used to remove IE and OE, but the end
result in this case is you have more limited options for viewing MHT
files. IIRC, in XP even if you had not somehow removed IE, you would
need OE installed in order to view MHT files. MHT is MIME HTML file.
You can save web pages in MHT (Web Archive) format from the browser....
it will save the content of the page including resources such as images,
Java applets, and Flash all in one file.

Opera has read them and saved in that format since at least version 9.
IE 5, 6 and 7 with OE installed support MHT. I think IE8 and 9 support
it natively. Firefox doesn't have the ability unless install an add-on
for the functionality. I don't know about Kmeleon's or Safari's MHT
abilities. Chrome recently added the functionality.

"E-Mail Brower"??

The only sample I have here, looked like this.

Thread-Topic: printer issue
thread-index: *deleted*
X-WBNR-Posting-Host: *deleted*
From: =?Utf-8?*deleted*=?= <*deleted*@discussions.microsoft.com>
References: <*deleted*@microsoft.com>
Subject: Re: *deleted*

That suggests the message could be MIME encoded, and have
separate sections with images and text. (Each should have a
MIME header, before the content begins.) That would be a
way to save pictures inline, in a text file. And with a
little care, the message could be 7 bit transparent by using
MIME and an appropriate encoding for the pictures (like
maybe base64 or ascii85 or the like).

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Base64
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ascii85

The funny thing was, that sample I have, actually contains 8 bit
characters, and renders differently depending on whether opened in
Notepad, Wordpad or a web browser. Which means there's some
latitude for "finding a mess" in there.

*******

And the one you want to avoid at all costs, is an "E-mail bowser".
Example here. Don't let one of these download your emails,
because they'll shred them.

I use WLM for my E-Mail Brower

First of all, Windows Live Mail is a combined email, news, and RSS
reader. It's not a "Brower", "Browser", or anything similar.

Secondly, what is all that hundreds of lines of extra crap you included
with your 1-line response? If that's what WLM does, you'd best get far
away from it.

Message-ID: <[email protected]>
Content-Type: multipart/alternative;
boundary="ouA8WDDETfBE=_?:"

This is a multi-part message in MIME format.

The message consists of two parts. It's MIME encoded.

--ouA8WDDETfBE=_?: <--- Begin of first part
Content-Type: text/plain;
charset="us-ascii"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Hulu Plus
....
--ouA8WDDETfBE=_?: <--- End of first part, begin of second part
Content-Type: text/html;
charset="us-ascii"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC
....
</html>
--ouA8WDDETfBE=_?:-- <--- End of second part

It could be dual-representation. The first part, is for programs
that only handle text. The second part, is for programs that
can display HTML content.

Right, but it's completely unrelated to my post or this thread! It's
some advertising crap about Hulu. Where the hell did that come from??

Why did you post all that worthless sh!t ?

Software to access email via POP3/SMTP/IMAP are clients, not browsers.
Thuis WLM, Outlook, outlook Express, The BAT!, Pegasus Mail, etc, are all
examples of "email client" software. They are not "browsers" as they don't
go to various sites and "browse" content.

WLM is a client browsers for Newsgroups,
it go to various Newsgroups and "browse" content..

You browse, you pick, you read..

For News or E-mail browsers is,
Not a Web browser..

Remember you call it a Web browser not I.
.EML files are really nothing but TXT (raw ASCII Text Files) of the raw
contents of a given email message. The email message consists of an Email
Header and Body where the body may contain attachments based upon RFC's 2049
~ 2046 which is collectively known as the Multipurpose Internet Mail
Extensions (MIME).

Fonts ASCII

where the links for your info.....
For I do not see raw ASCII Text Files by you here,
but a charset=iso-8859-1

MIME-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain;
format=flowed;
charset="iso-8859-1";
reply-type=response
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
The body of the email may be in HTML or pure text format and is HTML not
part of the email format definition. HTML it is just an application of a
way to format the content of the email message just like it is a way to
format the content of a Usenet post.

The statement "EML is HTML file to be open with your E-Mail Brower" is
completely fasle and misleading.

True Paul,
And it good to see you know were to look..
And show that the part of the format definition,
For the Content-Type: multipart/alternative,
that make it a Software or a Hot-Text..

FF, IE, Chrome and Opera are web brosers because you browse content.

Usenet and email work in a client server relationship. Software that accesses NNTP and
Email Servers are client software, NOT browsers !

Browsing is mostly a viewing and seraching concept.

Clients send and receive data equally.

Opera has supported MHT since at least v.9. Chrome
recently added support. Dunno about the other browsers.

I just tried an .mht file in Maxthon 3.0, my browser of choice. It's
supported there too.

Just have a few files? You can decode them with the online .eml

I'd be a bit wary of uploading my emails to a third party.
