Can't open Office files

Hi,

Got a new pc last week and I am having problems accessing my MS Office
files. The scenario is:

I backed up the document files on my old pc and began restoring them to the
new pc. The old pc had a goofy file structure due to the less than
impressive service we had received at nationally known computer retailer a
couple of years ago. So upon restoring the files to the new pc, it
maintained the old file structure. So I thought, I'll create the file/folder
system I want and then just copy the folders into it from one location to the
other on the new PC. It allowed me to copy the folders and files but now I
can't open any of the Word, Excel, Powerpoint, or Access files. I can open
the Corel Draw and Corel Photopaint files, jpgs, etc.. It won't let me
delete them either. So I tried to copy them back to the old file structure
to delete them but it wouldn't allow that.

The message I get when trying to open any of the MS Office files is that the
folder/file "isn't available." "The folder may be located on an unavailable
volume or protected by a password." I've never used a password so that can't
be the issue. These are all in C:\Documents and Settings\Compaq_Owner\My
Documents.

Do you know of any way to get at these so that I can at least delete them?
I was able to simply copy the files from the old PC to a CD and then copy
them into another location (c:\Documents and Settings\All Users) on the new
PC so that I can use the files I need, but I don't want duplicate copies of
files hanging around on the hard drive. All the files also seem to be on the
hard drive in a third location (c:\Compaq_Owner's documents) as well and I
can't open them here either.

I'm using Windwos XP Home with SP2 on the new pc. Our old pc did not have
SP2.

I have attempted to add a password to the Compaq_Owner username but that was
not successful as far as allowing me to open the files.

I just want a nice, neat hard drive!

Any thoughts? Thanks!

Did you check to see if your new computer was shipped with
OFFICE?

As a matter of fact, yes, the new pc does have a 60 day trial of Office on
it. I have Office 97 Professional that has Access in it which is a whole
other problem. Access is another problem as it won't open now while Word,
Excel, and Powerpoint will open. Something about a vba32.dll file. Is the
newer version of Office somehow interfering? Thanks! barbaraeh

Trial versions are intended to install as sole OFFICE
application and they do time out, blocking use of the files.

I suggest you visit an OFFICE newsgroup for advice on the
best way to recover full access to your OFFICE
files/applications. What will server you best is probably
to buy the upgrade to OFFICE Pro 2003.

Jim, thanks, I'll do that. Maybe I'll just uninstall the trial version but
I guess I should check the Office newsgroup first.
