Can't open EXCEL documents; can't open EXCEL

On attempting to start EXCEL I receive the following
message:
EXCEL caused an invalid page fault in
module EXCEL.EXE at 0177:3003dc7d.

Suggestion was made to examine C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office\Office\XLStart and, if there were
anything in it, move it out and try opening again.
I created a new folder C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office\XLStart1 and moved two items from XLStart
into it: Mscreate (DIR file modified in 1999) and PDFMaker
(355KB Microsoft Excel Add-In modified on 07/08/2003).
I restarted the system and was still unable to start
EXCEL.

On attempting to open an existing EXCEL file I receive
the following message:

In addition, I receive the error message: Cannot find file
C:\Path\filename.xls(or one of its components). Make sure
the path and filename are correct and that all required
libraries are available.

Any indication as to what's the problem here? All of
my past troubleshooting archives are stored in an EXCEL
worksheet. Thus, given the present situation, I am unable
to retrieve the document to see what, if anything, has
happened in the past.

I am running an HP 6465 using Windows 98. I perform
Disk Space cleanup (delete recycle bin, temporary internet
files, etc.) every Monday. Weekly maintenance was most
recently performed on 07/07/2003. Its record is also
stored in the above mentioned worksheet.

Does anyone out there have a bit of light to shed on
the subject?

Hi,

Store this information in a textfile <bg> or just search
in google on "excel startup problems" and get many
relevant hits...

This is a default list of things-to-do when Excel exhibits
startup problems.

Try opening Excel without any addins or hidden workbooks:

Start, Run,
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office\Excel.exe" /Automation

Quotes mandatory, Note you may have to change the path.

If your error disappears, there is either an add-in or a
(hidden) workbook that is loaded upon XL's start, which
bothers you.

- Try locating the XLSTART directory, move everything from
there.
- In XL: Tools, Addins, note the ones checked and uncheck
them one at the time, each time restarting XL
- In XL, Tools, options, general. Check if a path is
entered after "Alternate startup file location". Clear it.

Another option is to open XL in Safe mode:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Excel.exe" /Safe

Also, you might try:

"C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Office\Excel.exe" /Regserver

Yet another possible problem is a corruption of your
toolbar customisation file. Locate all files with
extension .xlb and rename the extension(s) to something
like .old
Now try and start XL again.

Also, NAV has shown to cause "Excel caused an invalid page
fault in module VBE6.DLL".
You might try disabling the Office plug in of NAV.

Other causes may be a full TEMP folder:

In Windows 95/98 and ME

Delete all files in C:\Windows\Temp

In Windows NT/2000/XP

Find and Select C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\local
settings\temp
and delete all files in there.

They are often left behind by installing programs but
Excel needs the space.

This is what MS has to say about startup problems:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-
us;Q280504

And this about startup switches:

.
After a week or so of continued dead-ends, I recall that
something of this nature had occurred in late 2002.
Apparently, the Toolbar Customization File became
corrupted for some reason or other. Suggestion was made
to locate all files with the extension .xlb and rename
them. I did so...EXCEL8.xlb became EXCEL8pete.xlb. I
then attempted to start XL and, voila! it worked. Sure
would like to know why this happened!
