Hi,
I can ping the client computer from the host but cannot ping the host from
the client. The Host has SP2 installed and the client has just had XP Home
installed without any patches as I cannot connect to the Internet via the
Host.
The Host (XP Home) IP 192.168.0.1
The Client (XP Home) IP 192.168.0.20
Both have a static address. The client Default Gateway is 192.168.0.1
The host has the Firewall Disabled.

I have even tried connecting to the host from my laptop which is XP Pro and
had the same problems.

The Host has a 2nd NIC connected to a Router to the Internet. The address
of the 2nd Nic is 192.168.1.10 and the router address is 192.168.1.1
No problems with the host connecting to the Internet.

I am tearing my hair out. Is there something to do with SP2 on the Host?

On the XP SP2 PC, try disabling the NIC connected to the router and see if
you can ping the other computer.

Or, try switching the network cables between the two NICs to make sure it's
not a card issue (change the IP address).

The steps I would try:
Disable one of the Host NIC's.
Get the two computers to ping each other.
Then setup the Host to the router.
Then enable your connection sharing software.

Remember, that with a static IP address setup, the computers that connect to
the host must have DNS server IP entries. These should be the same DNS
servers (from your ISP) that the Host is using to connect to the internet.

I have tried disabling the hos Nic which connects to the Internet but can
still only ping the client and the client cannot ping the Host. As I
mentioned previously, I have the same problem with my Laptop connecting to
the Host.
Any further suggestions would be appreciated.

I have also swapped the Nics around on the Host. So it is NOT a Nic
Problem. The Firewall has been disabled on the Host as well.

Have you ensured they all have the same workgroup name?

And that the subnet mask is the same (255.255.255.0)?

Fixed the problem. I had Cisco VPN client installed on the host. I stopped
the sevice and now its OK.

Would you happen to be running SyGate Home network routing software or some
other internet connection sharing software?
