Can't Mount DVD disc

Hi,

I have a Dell computer fitted with a CD/DVD ROM drive (Samsung SM-348B).

No problems using Nero 6 to burn CDs but I have been unsuccessful so
far in trying to burn DVDs.

When I place a blank DVD into the drive, the drive LED flickers on and
off for a very long time (more than 10 minutes!) and Nero 6 finally
states that the drive is empty.

What could be the problem?
