cant logon

windows xp home, when the log on account screen appears and I click user
logon, it immediatly flashes the spash screen then immediatly shuts down and
goes back to the log on account screen

any suggestions, thanks

PS....I just got into safe mode and it does the same thing there, immediatly
logs off the user. ugh.
