Cannot display Welcome Screen

Bob@HP

I am running XP Home with SP2. About a week ago the Welcome Screen
disappeared and we've only been able to log on with the Classic Logon screen.
Under "User Accounts", both "Use the Welcome Screen" and "Use Fast User
Switching" are ticked, and the "Logon Type" registry entry is set to (1), yet
the Classic Logon screen is still being displayed. There have been no new
hardware installations. Any ideas on how to get the Welcome Screen back?

Thanks.

Are you using VPN or perhaps installed something that interfered with the
Gina.dll?

VPN disabled the Welcome screen.

remove the entire registry entry for Gina.DLL in
....HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\WinLogon

Start/Run/Regedit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\WinLogon

In the right pane, remove the entry for Gina.DLL

Or see line 45 (right hand side):

Thanks for the info, Kelly, but I am not using a VPN and have no Gina.dll
entry in ...WinLogon. Any other suggestions?

Hi Bob,

So sorry for the delay in response....

Have you tried my edits per chance on line 80 (right hand side)?
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

If so and it still doesn't work, means that another software is interfering.
Some users have noted Linksys. However, with that being said, I have never
run across that issue with any Linksys product.

Hi, Kelly,

I tried your edits from line 80 on your tweaks page and that was
unsuccessful. We have nothing from Linksys on our system. The "Logon Type"
registry entry is still set at (1) and toggles correctly when I change how
users log on through "User Accounts".

The only other thing I've noticed in the last week or so is that only half
of my tray icons are appearing when the system boots up. This has happened
occasionally in the past and Windows usually straigntens itself out after a
couple of restarts. However, that has not been the case lately, and I'm
wondering if it could be related or a separate issue.

Any ideas on how I can find out what software may be interfering? To my
knowledge nothing new has been installed except the latest edition of
TurboTax...

Thanks,
Bob

Something else I noticed, Kelly, is that in the Start menu, my options are
"Log Off" and "Turn Off Computer" as it should be with the Welcome Screen
logon, not "Log Off" and "Shut Down" which are associated with the Classic
Logon. Don't know if this could be a clue, or not.....

Kelly,

I solved my own problem. I found that in the registry under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\WinLogon
there was no UIHost entry at all, so I added one with the correct value of
logonui.exe and voila - the Welcome Screen reappeared...although since there
have been no recent software of hardware installations, I can't figure out
how it disappeared in the first place.
