Welcome Screen gone

Somehow, the welcome screen is gone. I have gone to control panel, user
accounts and ensured welcome screen and fast switch are checked. I have
verified that the issue isn't GINA.dll. I run XP Home. Now when boot up or
attempt to switch user, it goes directly to logon screen and the only option
is my "owner" user. My wife said my son was using his user account and
complained it was running slow and when she re-booted, it skipped the welcome
screen and went to the logon screen. Any suggestions?

Try changing those settings for a short time, then revert back to as they
are now in user accounts. You might even run Sfc /Scannow In cmd & let
xp chk all its windows folders, during the switch...

Might
Start | Run <type in> control userpasswords2 <enter>
And select users must enter... see if that works.

Thanks for the information. I don't understand the Sfc /Scannow In cmd
instruction. Can you spell it out for a non-techie? Thx

Andrew E. is a troll. His advice is at best usually wrong and at worst
destructive. Ignore him.

It is unclear to me exactly what has happened. When you say it skipped
the Welcome Screen and "went to the logon screen" do you mean that you
are getting the classic Windows logon box instead?

The slowness of the computer could be caused by viruses/malware or by
failing hardware. The Welcome Screen issue could be caused by malware
or it could be caused by some program you or your son installed
needing .Net 1.1. If this is the case, simply going to Windows Update
and applying the latest service pack/patches for .Net 1.1 will solve
that issue. There isn't any way to tell from your post which of these
factors is the culprit.

Post back with more details for more focused help.

If you are unsure of the machine's virus/malware status, go through at
least some of the following malware removal steps:
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).

Malke, I took your advice and installed the net 1.1 updates, but my problem
still persists. I regularly run Spyware doctor without any indication of
malware, and regularly run Norton Antivirus, with no indication of a virus.
When I referred to the logon screen, I did mean the classic Windows logon
box. When I "switch user", it takes me back to the classic Windows logon
box. I have tried putting other users I have set up there, but it says that
it is locked and that only my user can unlock it. Any other suggestions?

It sounds like when you have the screensaver set to require a password when
returning to normal mode. Check on the Screensaver tab in the Display
applet and also take a look at the Power applet. If you do have that
requirement checked in either place, disable it.

You might try Start>Run>control userpasswords2 [enter] and see what you've
got there for requiring users to logon with a password. If you have it set
that way, uncheck that and see what happens.

None of that has worked. The logon screen I get looks very similar to what I
get at work. Any other ideas?

No, sorry. Aside from checking to see if you have any third-party
software installed that disables the Welcome Screen and Fast User
Switching (pcAnywhere for ex.) or if you've installed the Netware
component in your networking, I have no idea. Looking through your
posts, I don't see where you've answered the First Question of
Troubleshooting which is "what changed between the time things worked
and the time they didn't?". You're the only one who can answer that.
