Cant load a printer

When I try to LOAD PRINTER in the Control Panel I just get a pop-up that
states "CANNOT FINISH THIS REQUEST" or something ominous. No printers are
loaded and this is a FRESH install of XP PRO. When I try to load the Brother
1440 printer fromt the installation disk, it almost finishes then tells me
that "RCP SERVER NOT AVAILABLE". I would like to print from this machine
(not just from my G4 Apple Powerbook which has worked flawlessly for 15
months now!)
