Can't Install

I'm using XP Pro on a clone computer. I updated on my SP1 about two months
back, and suddenly couldn't install ANYTHING that uses the windows installer.
Also, my command prompt program closes after a few seconds, as does any
attempted install. they're open for about a minute, and then close without a
word, prompt, etc. I checked, and it said it was some issue in the update
that affected the windows installer to always return 0 or something, and that
I should install SP2 to correct the problem. So I ordered the CD (because
automatic update doesn't install either) and guess what: SP2 can't install
either. Am I supposed to backup my hard drive and reinstall windows?? I mean,
come on.
