Either your copy of XP is dorked or you HP is only "Vista ready". Check
HP's web site to make sure that XP can be installed on it. You might
also want to try a friend's XP CD and see if your CD is dorked or not.
Make sure to use the same type of XP CD as yours.

One option might be to install xp as a virtual machine within one of the
Linux installs.

Your computer probably has a SATA controller, Windows XP pre-dates SATA and
thus does not have any drivers for it on the disc.

Four options:

1) Use a floppy disk and provide Windows XP with the drivers as you're
installing it. It will say something along the lines of press F6 if you
need additional IDE/RAID drivers. That'll tell it to go to the floppy a bit
later and have a look. (Assuming the drivers exist).

2) Slipstream the SATA drivers onto the Windows XP disc.

3) See if the BIOS has an option to use the SATA controllers in an IDE
compatible mode.

4) Use Windows Vista.

Even if you get Windows XP installed, unless you know the hardware is
supported with Windows XP it still might not work properly.

Hi, Sashi.

When Windows Setup (whether Win2K or WinXP or Vista) says "hard disk not
found", it usually means that you are running something other than a "plain
vanilla" IDE hard drive. I've tried to find out on HP's website what kind
of HD that model has, but if the info is there, I've not been able to locate
it. Do you know if your hard drives are SCSI or SATA or some other
interface? If they are not IDE (also known as ATA or PATA), your WinXP
CD-ROM's Setup may not be able to read the drive at all. This is NOT an
unusual problem, especially when you are trying to install an operating
system other than the one that came pre-installed. Your hardware was
customized at HP's factory to fit the pre-installed OS; it may or may not be
compatible with any other OS. When WinXP was introduced and WinXP Setup was
written, SATA drives were rare; now they are quite common, but WinXP Setup
still never heard of them.

What version of WinXP are you trying to install, the original RTM or a later
CD-ROM with SP2 integrated - or some other CD-ROM? Is this an upgrade CD or
a full retail?

If you give us more information about your computer, we may be able to help.

This HP page MIGHT hold the key to your problem, but I'm not sure it fits
you exactly. If not, you might start there and look around. Since I've
never had any HP or any notebook, I’m not very good at navigating their
site.
