Can't install xp

G

Guest

I can't get xp to complete installation. It goes into reinstalling devices,
network, etc., then a screen comes up saying "please select ooperating system
to start" it gives you xp home and cancel setup to select from. If I select
xp home it goes right back to reinstalling devices, etc. It goes to 47
minutes left, then I get that screen and goes back up to 77 minutes
reinstalling the devices, network, then registering componets, upgrading
program and system settings.

I uninstall it and then my ATI graphics card was messed up, it said the
drivers weren't installed, I would reinstall them and it still said they
weren't installed. Somehow I got that working now after 10 tries.

You don't say whether you're doing a clean install or an upgrade. If you're
doing an upgrade from a previous version....don't. Get the entire package,
and install on a newly formatted hard drive. You'll save yourself a huge
bundle of headaches (of which you're experiencing only the first...)

yes I'm doing a upgrade, can't afford the full install.........I did an
upgrade to my brother's last year and had no problems.......

If you have already backed up your files and stuff, you can boot to the cd
and do a clean install. Have you old operating system disk handy and it will
ask you for it at the beguning. Place the cd in the drive and then it will
tell you to replace it with the XP setup. It will now perfomr a clean
install and hopfully not have errors. BTW i think it would be worth the
effort to tel setup to format the drive so you don't keep any problems.

I backed up my files with win98 installed........do I use the win98 bootup
disk? I'm not sure how to boot up witht he win xp cd........I have been
trying to figure that one out.

You can boot directly to the cd. Of course your bios setting has to support
this but most newer c opmputers do. just try booting to the cd first and if
it doesn't work then srt the boot order in the bios to include the cd
before the hardrive. Noe when you boot you should see somethign liek press
any keey to boot from cdrom. press a key and follow the instructions.

Also if you have more then one cdrom (ie. a burner and dvdplayer or
somethign simular) try placing the cdrom in the other player. sometimes only
the first cdrom on the ide cable will be bootable.

Well I did figure out how to do it, but it wiped out all my existing
files......not too happy about that so I formatted and went back to win98.
XP also changed the drive letters to 2 of my drives and my backup's were
useless because the burner didn't recognize the cd burnt......

I will try to install xp one mor etime the regular way, if it works fine if
it doesn't I give up and will stick to win98 a bit longer.........
