Windows XP Pro Installation Not completing

Matt

This all started about a month ago. I was leaving work for the weekend and i
shut my computer down. Upon returning i started it up, and it wouldn't allow
me to enter windows normally. It went to the boot from safe mode, safe w/
networking ect... menu every time. I tried many things to remedy this
editing my startup. Checking out my video card, reseting the cmos ect...
luckly there wasn't anything to important on my HDD. I formatted the HDD and
went to reinstall windows. Upon reinstalling it, the install copys all the
files and gets to the GUI environment where it installs the devices. It gets
down to about 34 minutes remaining and the screen goes black. The PC doesn't
power down it just quits the install.

I thought maybe it was my ram or mobo. I tried several things, switched out
the ram with other (known working) ram. I even got to the point where i
rma'd my mobo to asus. I got it back the other day hoping it was a bad slot
or something. but i still get the same problem. HDD partitions fine,
installation copys all system files, gets to the point where it installs
devices and the screen goes black. Any ideas guys?

thanks

Thanks alot Daave. Your post helped me to finish my install only to find out
that my vid card was bad aswell. Which is what i thought was the problem in
the first place, but was told otherwise. ;)
Oh well, what can ya do. Thanks again for your extremely helpful post.
