Can't install SP2 on vista

P

paula

Hello,

Vista Service pack 2 won't install on hubbies laptop. (Vista Home Premium
32-bit) I have tried 3 times, rebooting after each attempt.
An error pops up saying:
"C:\Windows\system32\sqmapi.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or
it contains an error.
Try installing the program again using the original installation media or
contact your system Administrator or Software Vendor for support."

The error code is C0000020
and on the heading bar is says "SPCLITE.EXE - Bad Image

We have no idea what program or what .dll it is talking about.
Any ideas?
I am running Malwarebytes on his computer at the moment to see if anything
comes up regarding that.

Hello Paula,

There are two service packs for Windows Vista. Service Pack 1 (SP1) was
released in April 2008, and might already be installed on your PC (to find
out, click on the Start button and enter "winver" in the search box).

Service Pack 2 (SP2), available in May 2009, contains all the updates we've
released since SP1 plus support for new types of hardware and emerging
hardware standards. You should install both Service Packs, and you need to
install SP1 before SP2.

Service Pack 2
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/dd767387.aspx

The full file downloads are much bigger whereas if you download via AU, you
only get what you need.

I updated the Vista laptop by downloading the full file and installing
offline with the antivirus turned off etc. and then I installed IE8.

As you see SP2 contains all the updates that were released since SP1, so by
downloading via AU you only get what you need, by downloading the full file
you have everything plus you have it if you want it for later if you require
it.

For Service Packs, I prefer to download the full file and then install
offline after preparing the system first.

Methods to download the latest service pack (VISTA SP2)
Method 1: Turn on Automatic Updates (Recommended for most users)
Method 2: Check for updates on Windows Update (Same as Method 1 but not
automatic)

Try Method 3
Method 3: Obtain the latest Windows Vista service pack from the
Microsoft Download Center (the full file)
<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935791/#Method3>

(Good to use if the computer on which you want to install the service pack
is not connected to the Internet)

Go to <http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/dd262148.aspx> and look
at the left side.

Things to know about SP2 and FAQs.

Review them thoroughly and see if that answers most or all of your
questions.

If not, repost here.

You will also note the download site available for the full download which
can be used instead of the Windows Update service.

Good luck

I have tried all of your suggestions and nothing seems to work.
He has SP1 already installed.
I tried going both through WU and downloading the full SP2.
NADA!
It seems to have a problem with the sqmapi.dll file.
Which in googling is a Microsoft associated file I think.
I looked in the /windows/sysytem32/ folder and that file contain 0 bytes.
I tried deleting it and it won't let me through admin rights.

Try 'unlocker'...it works like a charm. Hopefully it will work for
you. If not, try safe mode.

Hi Paula,

Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for
Windows Vista, but only for Service Pack 2 (SP2).

This support for Windows Vista Service Pack 2 (SP2) is valid until November
26, 2009.

Availability of chat or e-mail support differs depending on your geographic
location.

Go to
http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?prid=13014&gprid=582034 &
select appropriate category (e.g., Installation).

If you're having problems installing SP2 *via Windows Update* or *Automatic
Updates*, you can /also/ post about your problems here:

it!
