Can't install Microsoft Fax on XP SP2

D

Dragon

Everytime I try to install the Fax Console it goes thru wizard and completes
but in the Programs -> Accessories -> Communications -> Fax it shows (Empty)

the event viewer has error

Fax Service failed to read the outgoing routing configuration,
possibly due to registry corruption or a lack of system resources.
Reinstall Fax Service using Repair mode.
Win32 error code: 2. This error code indicates the cause of the error.
For more information, see Help and Support Center at

When you click on the link it says there is no information regarding this
event.

Anybody know a fix for this. I have the original XP Pro CD and upgraded to
SP2 via windows update.

Adding a little to Chuck's comments, this page is a little closer to home:

2. Why can't the XP Fax Installation Program find the Installation Files?

In this case, it sounds you may have security data base corruption as
documented here:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884018/EN-US/
You cannot add a Windows component in Windows XP

You can either:

1. Get the hotfix mentioned in the KB article and install it. Microsoft
usually waives any charges for support calls to get supported hotfixes
listed in Knowledge Base articles.

2. Try this procedure using the Esentutl.exe utility mentioned in the KB
article to recover from security database corruption:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c00270202
HP and Compaq Notebook PCs: Unable to Install Windows XP Fax Software

Note that Microsoft does NOT recommend that you use the Esentutl.exe utility
and would prefer you try the hotfix.

From an email received from the original poster:

----------
I found the problem. I had to disable McAfee Virus Scan. Everything
installed successfully then.
