Can't add a fax

The "Set up faxing" option under the 'printers and faxes' doesn't
display a fax after the option is selected. The option appears to run
okay, and I can even see a message for a few seconds about "Microsoft
Shared Fax..", but then it disappears. All that is left are the
printers.

When I first tried this option, it asked for the XP SP2 CD, which I
put into the CD-player, but it said it couldn't find the files, I
think some problem with them being compressed, and of a different
name. I selected 'cancel/no', and then when I tried it again, noticed
it had progressed to another file (the next one), so I did that a few
times, and eventually, the 'install' went through okay. Possibly
something got messed up there ???

I also tried the 'Add or remove programs" - "add/remove windows
components". It also 'appears' to work okay, and there is an option
under accessories/communications as 'Fax' but it is empty. The "Fax
Services" under add/remove windows components is always showing as
unchecked, the install doesn't go through.

When I check the event viewer/syetm log, after attempting to 'Set up
faxing", there are 4 warnings messages.

I have an internal modem, which is shown as 'Agere Win Modem' and
also as "AT&T/Lucent LT WinModem". I'd just like to be able to send a
fax, nothing fancy.

I did have Bitware installed, but that didn't work anyway (some old
16-bit software), so that was uninstalled.

Any clues please ?

Tried running 'esentutl' as Hal Hostetler mentioned in another post,
from the article here -
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?lc=en&cc=us&docname=c00270202

and the run dialog box

esentutl /p %windir%\security\database\secedit.sdb

some warning message, and something happened. Tried to reboot, took
about 4 attempts, but finally it went okay. Tried the 'set up fax' and
now I can see a device called 'fax', and also under the
accessories/communications, there are a few options now (not empty as
before).

Thanks Hal. :D
