Can't Install ANYTHING

I have XP Professional (5.1, Build 2600). Also, P4 2.8
with HT Tech; 512 MB DDR RAM; 80 GB hard drive (7200
rpm); my motherboard supports my cpu (with the HT Tech,
etc.)
My problem: I can't install ANYTHING - Everytime I try
to install a game the computer freezes up in mid-
install. I have tried updating my InstallShield with the
latest iKernel engine for InstallShield with no results,
(because I was recieving a message on some programs that
lead me to believe that was the problem.) I was able to
install programs after I had first setup my computer (I
built it myself); but cannot now. Please help!

Did you try doing a Repair install of XP on top of itself to see if this
would fix the problem?

I'll try a repair install - haven't thought of that - I
almost gave up and formated the hard drive - but I'll try
your suggestion first - tnx
