Can't get Windows Update to Work

W

William Lugg

I'm helping my father-in-law get past a virus attack. All
the problems have been removed, but I can't get Windows
Update to work right.

When I go to the System applet and click the Automatic
Updates tab, all the choices are greyed out. How do I get
these thing reenabled so that the automatic updates will
work properly?

Thanks.

Start | Run | Type: services.msc | OK |
Scroll down to and double click: Automatic Updates |
Under startup, set to: Automatic | Click: Apply |
Click the Start button | When it has started, click: OK |
Close Services

Start | Run | Type: sysdm.cpl | OK | Automatic Updates tab |
You'll have to check the first box to activate the other choices

I opened services.msc, but can't find the Automatic
Updates entry.

Is this an indicator of something more seriously wrong?

Thanks.
