Can't Get to Desktop

I have a Dell Desktop and have Windows XP Professional
installed on it. When I turn my computer on I get the dell
start up screen followed by the Windows XP Pro screen.
Instead of proceeding towards the desktop, it goes back to
the Dell start up screen and then to the XP pro screen
again. It just goes between those to screen continually
without ever going to the desktop. Please help!!
