can't get to any MS download url or use MS update--activex?

Folk:

so I went through the validation / diagnostic process and get this:

Microsoft Genuine Advantage Diagnostic Results

Passed Active scripting allowed
Passed Display images enabled
Passed Computer time and date correct
Passed ActiveX enabled
Failed Microsoft ActiveX controls loading


I used to see the activex info bar in IE6 all the time, but no more; some
time ago I had to correct MS Office Update problems by reinstalling Office.
I'm flummoxed.
