can't get newsgroups on HP laptop via comcast giganews

Hi,
I have comcast broadband internet and a router with cat 5 to
a tower and laptop. no network set up.

XP pro on tower, XP home on laptop (HP Pavilion SH535)

On the tower, everything works, on the laptop I can't get newsgroups.
My ng server is giga news and access is included in the comcast monthly
fees.
That's what I'm using to post this message via my tower. I tried a few
public domain ngs on the laptop and can't access them either.

This isn't a new situation. I've been trying to get newsgroups on the
laptop for a couple of years now, always with the same result.
The laptop has Juno on it as a dialup connection. There is no firewall.
AVG antivirus is running on the laptop. When it tries to connect to the
newsgroups it does it by trying to dial juno. Of course it can't because
I don't have a phone line plugged in.

How use my broadband connection, and not Juno, to
connect to newsgroup servers? In the otions thing I have never
dail a connection checked.

I have been unable to find any switches for it. Every couple of months
I try again and fail again, so this time I thought I'd try a newsgroup
for some help.

thanks in advance for any ideas you may have on this.

PS: A google search said to run netstat -an and see if it's listening to
ports 25 and 110. It isn't. So I did the same on the tower, and it isn't
listening to them either, but it works here.

News uses port 119. Mail uses 25/110. In IE Options - Connections do you have it set not to dial.

Under Dial-up and VPN never dial has a dot in it.

In local area neetwork (LAN) settings Auto Detect settings has a check in
it.

The proxy server box is not checked.
I don't know what a proxy server is so I left it alone.

Thanks for your replys.
