Can't get in safe mode

Tried using the F8 key during boot bit didn't work. Also, the instructions on the "Help" screens for safe mode operation don't seem to match my system. How do I get into safe mode?
 
If you still have the Manual that came with the computer it will tell you
how to do it. You probably have a
Proprietary System

Reboot tapping F8 each second.
Select Safe Mode at the menu.
