Can't get Dial-up to dial automatically on IE6 startup

C

Carol Haynes

Until today it has worked fine - I click on Explorer on my desktop and the
dial-up dialler automatically dials the internet.

Today for some reason it has stopped doing this and I just get a message box
saying 'No internet connection' and options to Work Offline or Retry to
connect. Retry just leads to a website not found error page.

In Internet Options is says Always connect to default connection and that is
still selected as default. The dialler works manually.

I have tried setting it to Never dial and changing the default ISP, restart
and then reset the settings, restart and try again but it doesn't reset the
settings?

Strangely I am not having this problem with other user profiles on the same
computer (I am using WinXP Pro with multiple users) so it must be something
to do with my own profile.

Any suggestions to sort this out gratefully received.

TIA

Carol Haynes

Same thing happend to me. How weird. But mine still works
in outlook express. Did creating a new profile work?

How do I do that?

Do you mean create a new user and use that or is there some way I can
salvage my existing user settings?

Thanks

Same thing also happened to my daughter's PC (XP Home). I
tried various settings in IE, and also checked the
registry. All seems "normal".

I just asked my daughter to try another profile, and the
other profile works ok (i.e., auto-dial works).

Any thoughts on how to recover/re-create a profile
without loosing all of the settings (gasp)?

Interestingly I created a new profile, all worked fine until a few hours
later it happened again to that profile!

This is incredibly FRUSTRATING!

At least I am not alone - there seem to be quite a few people banging heads
against the wall on this one.

Can I ask any other people who have experienced this to add a comment to
this thread and also a note of when it started.

Cheers

I started having the exact same problems yesterday. A coincidence? Seems peculiar
Did find Opaserv worm thru Spybot scan and had to go to AV site to get download to remove, but that did not fix this situation

Installed latest MS patches earlier this week but all worked okay till yesterday.

Will watch this thread for further developments.

Yes, exactly the same thing is happening here, starting yesterday. I
also noticed that the "work offline" option has disappeared from my file
menu, has anybody else seen this?

I tried uninstalling the Windows update from 14 February (KB832894) but
this made no difference so I have reinstalled it.

I found a microsoft knowledge base article (811151) that
describes how to copy data from one profile to another.

It may help (by making it possible to copy profile data
rather than having to manually re-create), or it might
just copy the corruption to the new profile.

My daughter is having this problem (loss of auto-dial)
while logged on with her profile. Her husband's profile
does not have this problem. I pointed her to this article
and told her to create a new profile and then try copying
data from her old profile.

Will post here when I find out if this worked.

As I posted elsewhere this didn't cure the problem.

I set up a new user on the system and initially everything was fine but
after a couple of hours auto dial up stopped again!

Same thing with me, started on Feb 14th, WinXP Home & IE6
& all latest updates. I can use Outlook Express or MSN
Messenger 6.1 to connect to the internet as normal but
Internet Explorer won't connect. It does work fine though
after a connection has been established by either of the
other two programs.

I did a system restore to the previous day (Feb 13th) &
this fixed the problem but when I tried to connect today
(Feb 15th) the problem had reappeared. Most Confusing
indeed!!!!

They are exactly the symptoms I am getting too!

Outlook Express and Outlook XP will both connect to the internet as normal
but IE6 won't.

Strangle MSN Explorer (which I thought was just an annoying front-end for
IE6) does connect to the internet, as does Mozilla.

Just done a complete reinstall of IE6 (as per KB article 318378) and it
makes no difference.

I have also done a complete Virus/Trojan Scan using both installed NAV2004
and the Symmantec online scanner, also checked with up to date Pest Patrol
and SpyBot Search and Destroy and my system is clean - I was beginning to
suspect a virus, but I don't think it can be (unless it is an unknown one).

Hmmm ...

Just ran Lavasoft AdAware and it flagged up a component in Google Toolbar

I uninstalled Google Toolbar too, and now everything is back to normal .....

So much for automatic updates!!

Interesting -- late on Feb 13, I noticed that the Google Toolbar had
changed to a valentine's day design, and then I had the same dial-up
problem that everyone is reporting. I wonder how that could cause
this effect though.

In any case, I've also un-installed the toolbar and everything is
working again. Has anyone re-installed the toolbar successfully? I
already miss the thing!
Cheers,
Will

Give it a while!

Alternatively there are some other good utilities - I find Copernic very
good indeed as it searches using multiple engines.

You can also make google your default engine and then you just type the
search text in the address bar - no software necessary.

Yes, I'm very impatient! I uninstalled, rebooted and immediately
reinstalled the google toolbar and everything is back to normal - will
let you know if it doesn't last!

Strange - I reinstalled the ToolBar and immediately went back to the
problems. Uninstalled again and everything works fine.

Yes, the problem has started again this morning so don't bother
reinstalling Google! It was fine a few times but then the original
problem recurred. (I see that the same thing has been reported elsewhere
here).
