Can't get CD/DVD drive to work in Vista

For months the DVD burner in my system was working fine, but in the last
few days it stopped working. Vista detects it and loaded the device
drivers, but it does not initialize the hardware properly. (I always
get error "code 37".) Note that the system does detect that the DVD
drive is there, and the driver does get the model number from the drive.
Just to make sure there wasn't an issue with the hardware, I tried
swapping the DVD drive with a new one, but I get the same problem.

Any suggestions?

I did not install any CD/DVD recording software. (I was just using the
CD/DVD burning that comes with Vista.)

I did try to follow the steps in that article, but the reg keys
mentioned are not in my registry.

Note, I have tried going into the device manager, uninstalling the
CD/DVD device, and reinstalling (scan hardare), but I get the same
problem ever time.

Any other suggestions?

I had similar problems until I uninstalled Daemon Tools I would think
other virtual drives may also cause problems

I don't have any virtual drives installed. I have 6 SCSI hard drives, a
ZIP drive, and a card reader, that's it.

No DVD burning software installed. (just using the built in stuff that
comes with Vista)

No system tools software installed.

I have tried to think of anything I installed that could have any impact
on a CD/DVD drive, but there isn't anything installed but some basic
applications (Office, some media players, etc) and utils (brosers, IM
software, stuff like that).

My system worked fine for months with the Iomega ZIP drive installed.
No problems with the CD/DVD drive before. But just to make sure, I
tried disconnecting it. No change. That's not it.

Nope ;)

Do you have any other devices listed under CD dvd drives?

No. I have the 1 drive (CD/DVD burner), and that's it. As I mentioned,
I tried swapping it with another DVD drive, but that had the same problem.

Are they SATA ? I've read there are some problems with those. I
thought that was my problem also until I removed the virtual drive.
Looks like you may have to wait for a driver.

Nope. I have been using standard Parallel ATA (IDE) drives. I even
tried loading the CDROM drivers that come with XP, but no luck there
either. If I load the XP CD drivers, I get error code 39. If I load
the Vista CD drivers, I get error code 37.

Isn't there anyone from Microsoft that reads this news group? If so,
please send me a zip file with the CD drivers from Vista. Perhaps mine
somehow got corrupted.

I have a Dell E1505 and a few days ago my NEC-6650A DVD Drive just
disappeared from the My Computer display. The Device Manager properties for
the device stated that the firmware couldn't be loaded and possibly a file
had been corrupted. I downloaded the driver/firmware; but I couldn't install
it. I got an error message from the NEC Drive Firmware Flash Utility that
said "Target NEC ND-6650A is not found correctly".

My system is very simple; one hard drive and the NEC CD/DVD drive. Now the
only thing that has happened was that I upgraded my BIOS (from the Dell
site) and installed Vista Home Premium. I'm working with Dell tech support
on this issue. I've refrained from restoring Windows XP just to see if my
drive comes back <g>. I'll not play with the registry at this point.

If I'm convinced that it's not a hardware issue I'll go forward. Let's face
it we've installed a new OS, so its hard to tell. Everything appeared to go
smoothly until this matter came up. Good luck to you.

Follow-up - I removed the Upper and Lower filters and it fixed my problem
(at least for now). I haven't loaded any Roxio SW; I do have Nero.

Roxio EMC9 is compatible with Vista but there is an issue with Drag to Disc.
One of it's drivers by Sonic will not load because of the MS hot fix
KB929427. Un-installing this hot fix should solve the problem until Roxio
can come up with a fix.
