SATA Dvd drive install freeze with Vista

Just installed a SATA Samsung S203 DVD RW which causes VIsta to freeze
within about 60seconds! Have tried updating the motherboard, and
graphics drivers but no luck. I did manage to get it to work just once
when I disabled Magic ISO virtual CD device driver, at which point the
message 'installing device drivers' appeared on reboot and the drive
worked. But then had to do a rollback for various reasons and even
uninstalling my virtual CD device driver completely does not solve the
problem anymore.

This also happened with an LG DVD SATA burner so I'm thinking there's
nothing wrong with the drive, and the system has been working fine for
almost a year. Any ideas before I do a reinstall of the OS? I would
really like to know how to solve this issue before reformatting

What kind of motherboard? In addition to the chipset drivers, are you
certain you installed the sata drivers for that motherboard?

Is there anything else (a harddrive) connected to the sata controllers? And
they work?

I know it seems obvious, but without a little more info its hard to
determine what you are experiencing

Thanks for the ideas - will try the first. In the meantime it's an
Asus M2N SLI Deluxe. Has RAID array (2x maxtor drives) on SATA 5 and
6, Samsung Spinpoint 250Gb on Sata 1. Have tried the DVD on Sata 2-4
but no luck. OCZ memory. Everything running at stock speeds, no
overclocking!

As near as I can tell, this motherboard has some difficulty seeing optical
sata drives.

First, the jmicron controller (I think it is port 1) cannot see optical
drives at all--I don't think you are using that one, so we will dismiss
that.

Another fairly common issue is out of date bios--what bios are you using?

Another common issue is that old Intel Storage Manage drivers are the
culprit. It seems updating these to the most current version solves a lot of
the issues. Don't get the ones off the Asus site

Try the Intel site

Interesting comment about the bios. I'm using the original bios, not
sure which version and I've had the motherboard about 6months.
Generally I don't like updating bios's unless absolutely necessary.
The bios doesn't seem to be an issue as it will recognise the drive
and can even run an install DVD of Vista from it.

Disabling writing caching as suggested earlier didn't help I'm afraid
(although the drive did appear momentarily in My Computer). The
JMicron controller has always been disabled (I have no intention of
using it). And I should have mentioned this is on an AMD platform and
I have the latest drivers for the 570 chipset and graphics card from
Nvidia. One interesting thing, Vlite which I was going to use to build
a new Vista install with up to date drivers etc. won't work! I get an
error message saying the WIM filter is not installed, and upon
installing it still get reports of Mounting problems. Since I
originally had this device running when MagicISO virtual CD drive was
disabled I wondered if this was the problem, but have tried
reinstalling/uninstalling this application, various system rollbacks
etc. and still no good. Also Windows SFC reports that some files are
corrupt and it cannot fix them so next idea is to try a scandisk.

what about the intel matrix drive?

That said, if you have errors are being reported by sfc, that is farm more
likely than the matrix drivers or the bios

Ok, sorry but now I'm lost. What is the intel matrix drive and how
would that affect a AMD system?

I'm sorry--I must be dumber than a box of rocks....I was looking at a
different motherboard. Even though you said AMD, I kept looking at the wrong
manual.

Sorry.

What nvidia drivers are you using? The ones from Asus or off the Nvidia
site?

The ones from the Nvidia site - thanks for your help but now getting
lots of BSOD so preparing a disc on work laptop to do a rebuild. Looks
like something more serious is up! Still would have been interested to
know why it was playing up

Yes....I hate to let go of a problem, but sometimes it is better to just cut
your losses and start fresh

Ok - now things get really strange! Have reinstalled Vista and all was
well (both LG - IDE and Samsung DVD - SATA burners were reading discs)
and then bang! Freeze.

At the time I was ripping a RAM disc from the Samsung drive to the
hard drive, and then inserted a DVD into the LG drive. As soon as the
LG spun up the system froze. Event log read:

ERROR: IRQARB: ACPI BIOS does not contain an IRQ for the device in PCI
slot 14, function 0. Please contact your system vendor for technical
assistance.

Now since then I've managed to reboot and use both drives successfully
and I should point out that I've not yet installed any Vista updates
(was hoping SP1 would be released in the next couple of weeks or so
and I could manage until then). After searching the Microsoft
Knowledge Base I also found this:

CAUSE
This error message may occur on a computer that uses a Peripheral
Component Interconnect (PCI) bridge that supports message-signaled
interrupts but does not support line-based interrupts.

RESOLUTION
This error message may safely be ignored.

Note Do not ignore this error message if the following conditions are
true:* A yellow explanation mark (!) appears next to the device in
Device Manager.
* You receive the following error message in the Properties dialog box
for the device in Device Manager:
This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code
12)

All devices in Device Manager are fine although on first boot from
installing Vista, there were 2 ACPI components which Vista could not
find drivers for. Uninstalling the components and then reinstalling
and searching online for device drivers found them to be something to
do with Intel Quick Response...something or other. So maybe I've just
answered and solved my own problem ....

..... although somehow I doubt it and think I'll be back on this thread
soon! Hope this helps somebody else out :)

For the benefit of a future audience which may stumble across this
thread...
....the solution to my SATA DVD drive freezing problems is...under
Primary IDE in the bios, set to NONE not AUTO

I can't be 100% this is the final solution but it's one of them. The
system has now been running happily for a good few days using both
drives without any issues. I have not upgraded firmware in either the
LG 4167B or Samsung S203N drive or updated the Asus bios (M2N Sli
Deluxe) and since I consider such activities always to be risky this
to me seems like the ideal solution

Bear :)
