Dvd drive issue.

The problem is: my dvd-rw drive plays CD's AND DVD videos but will not
play game DVD's.

What i have tried so far.

1) Used a lense cleaner to clean the drive.
2) removed upper and lower filters (registry)
3) Tried the game in another system (it works and is vista compatiable -
and yes the other machine was running vista)
4) Brought a new drive - still same problem.
5) uninstalled and re-installed drivers
6) Updated mother board drivers
7) tried the origonal drive from this machine in another machine running
vista - guess what? it works fine.
8) Tried system retore to the ealiest point possible - no good!
9) Same as above but from a backup - no good.
10) removed the only burning software i have installed (nero7) and re-
installed - no good. Also I would like to point out that the drive was
working perfectly when I first installed nero 7.

I am sure that between the drive working and ok and not working ok I
have not installed any new software, only Vista updates etc but it hard
to point out when it actually failed. Could this be a registry problem?
Driver issue? Big help please as I am dying to play this game and my son
is too. (can't get refund as the DVD works!)

big big help!!!

thx

Hi,

Have you tried disabling your antivirus and antispyware software? Sounds
like there is a software conflict on this machine. Other things, like P2P
software and distributed computing routines could also be interfering.

What are your actual symptoms? What happens differently on the other PC?

It could be your auto play settings.
If you insert the game DVD does explorer show the files on it? If you run
the setup form here does it work - if not what errors?

What Game? Have you tried the game's support forum?
It could be anti-piracy in the game going wrong - I find that if I run
process explorer, then even after I have exited it Civ IV won't start, and
Medieval totalWar II won't save/load.

You said you uninstalled and reinstalled Nero, did you try it while Nero
was uninstalled?

An addition to this question would be, is this game for a PC or is it for
some platform such Xbox, Playstation, etc.

wow! big response there guys thanks.

ok lets start answring them.

1) Yes it is a genuine DVD game. I am being honest when i say i do not use
copied games etc. It is theft. Vista is also genuine.

2) Yes it is a PC game and not for other consoles like a wii etc.

3) Antivirus stuff etc has not changed at all. Other games worked ok when
antivirus was installed. Also ther other PC i checked this game and drive
on are the same, (built at the same time) One for me and one for my dad,
same antivirus, OS etc .... sad but even the same settings!!
I have just tried disabling Antivirus, firewall etc Still no joy.

4) Symptoms - But DVD game in, close drive. Small spin up then stops (no
light activity at all on the drive). If you try to access the drive it says
the drive is empty and shoots the drive open. I have left this with disc in
for about 30 minutes once! but still no joy.

But when i put a DVD movie or CD game etc in the drive spins then will
either auto-run or pops up with options (depending on media).

The tricky thing is DVD movies work ok so I cant see it being the drive
itself.

Which game? Is it more than one game?

This sounds like it isn't recognising that the disk is present.
I occasionaly get this with movies - but putting the disk back in normally
fixes it.

If it doesn't recognise it then waiting wont have any effect.

I assume you have managed to read this disk in this drive in the other
vista PC.

Are both PCs the same edition of Vists (home basic/ home pro) Are they
both 32, or both 64 bit?

on both PCs note down the details of the same drive (provider, date, and
version no, in the driver details note down all files listed)

Anything that is different between the two PC may be the problem.

My guess is that something in the formal/layout of the DVD (probably an
anti-copying feature) is incompatible with a supplementary driver (my
guess would be nero incd)
To get this go to Control Panel, device manager, select the specific DVD,
right click, properties, driver tab.

You didn't answer my question - did you try it with nero uninstalled?

In nero installed on the other PC?

What is the make and model of the DVD drive.

thanks for your reply.

Its any DVD game, not just the one I am trying to install.

I have opened and closed the drive many times and still the same result.

Both PC's are identitical in every way. I built both at the same time, same
board, CPU etc etc even the same DVD drive. Both Vista Ultimate 32bit.

I have removed Nero and I am still getting the same prolbem. Nero is
installed on the other PC, same version.

The drive is an NEC DVD-RW ND-3550A (same as on the other machine). I also
swapped drive from one machine to the other same problem on this machine,
drive works on other one, so I do recon its a software, driver or registry
problem.

Thanks for your help so far!
