Can't get Automatic Connection to work

G

gindie

For some reason, my DSL connection is no longer automatically made when
I launch IE or Outlook. I have tried all three of the options
(Never..., Dial..., Always...) on Tools/Internet Options/Connections to
get it to work, with no success.

I have SBC/Yahoo DSL using Windows XP Home Edition (Service Pack 1)

Any help would be appreciated.

I seem to be having the same problem. I'm connected via SBC DSL just fine but
IE doesn't show a LAN connection. When I try to access a web page I'm given a
Dial Up window.

Any ideas how to resolve this problem?

Thanks!

Hi omega :)

You don't mention the version of Windows you are using, which really is a
must when asking for help in the newsgroups, but, try the following as it
may apply
to your OS and see if it helps

Disable Proxy Settings
Tools>Internet Options> Connections tab> LAN Settings button
Under Proxy server, make sure the box there is unchecked

Disable Automatic Proxy configuration
http://charterpipelinentx.net/disableproxy.htm

Lan Settings- Proxy Server - Disable
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/proxyenableundo.reg

Hope this helps.

Jan,

Thanks for the quick response. I'm running XP. I already tried the proxy
setting suggestion I found in one of the other postings (I think it was from
you) but that didn't do the trick. Any other ideas?

Muchas gracias,
Omega

Hi omega :)

Thank you for the update information. Try the following and see if it
helps:

Go to Tools>Internet Options>Connections>LAN settings tab
See if the Automatically detect settings is. If checked, UNcheck it. If
unchecked, check it.
Make sure the "Use a proxy server for...." box is UNchecked.

Prevent IE from disconnecting with DSL or cable connection

Go to Control Panel
Network and Dialup Connections
Local Area Connection
Click Properties on the General tab
Click Configure on the next General tab
Click Power Management tab
Uncheck the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
Ok all the way out

There's an option in Internet Options to shut down the connection if no
longer needed -
Gop to Tools> Internet Options> Connection>Settings>Properties>Dialing
UNCheck 'Enable idle disconnect' if it is checked and then OK out.

How to troubleshoot possible causes of Internet connection problems in
Windows XP

also...

Connection settings in OE can also affect IE:

Open Outlook Express and go to Tools>Options>Connection
Make sure "Connect to this account using"...is not checked for each mail and
news account you have created.
Make sure there is no conflict in account settings. Each account should
show the connection option of "Any available".
Make sure the "Hang up after send/receive" is UNchecked

Hope this helps.
