Can't find TCP/IP protocol - is it necessary for home broadband?

networkquestion

I was just trying to set up a static IP address and noticed that my TCP/IP
protocol isn't in the local area connection properties. The client for MS
network is there. When I try to add a protocol, a message appears that
says:

"Cannot add the requested component. Cannot find the file specified".

I was trying to close ports so I disabled the TCP/IP Netbios helper service
several months ago.

Right now, all I have is a router, a VOIP modem, and a computer hooked up.
If I add another computer, or if I want to create a static IP address, am I
correct in assuming that I have to start the above service?

Do I need the client for MS networks checked if I'm not using Windows
Defender? I think I once read that I needed it for that or for Auto
updates. I'm assuming I'll need it if I add another computer to the
network.

TCP/IP is required for almost ANY internet connection nowdays.

What operating system?

Windows 2000 Pro

I seem to have no problems connecting with the TCP/IP Netbios Helper
Service disabled and the TCP/IP Protocol absent from the "Local Area
Connection" properties.

Why do you need Client for MS Networks or MS File and Print Sharing on
the NIC or dial-up connection, if the machine has a direct connection to
the modem and to the Internet? The machine has no business being in any
networking situation on the Wide Area Network/Internet.

That's one of my questions. I have no problem unchecking it, but it seems
that I can run a broadband connection without the TCP/IP protocol. Is that
correct?

What I can't do is set up a static address without running TCP/IP.

Interesting, I just tried to uncheck "Client for MS networks" and couldn't.

I'm going to see what happens if I sign in as the administrator. I thought
I had administrator rights.

You can't access the Internet or another machine on the LAN without the
TCP/IP protocol that I know about. The TCP/IP protocol has been there in
all cases that I have seen.

That would make sense.

Then you must be a braindead, clueless fool. TCP/IP is not required for a
LAN.

I was responsible for local area networks running 802.4, TCNS, IPX/SPX.
Some of these were used in LANs before the TCP model was developed.
In reality TCP/IP was designed more for wide area networks.

True. I also still use netbeui to connect DOS systems just to read/write
files from some server.
