Can't enter text into text/dialog boxes

My friend is having a problem with his browser. He's
running XP and IE6. When he goes to a web site like
Yahoo, Google, or any place that has a box for entering
text, all he can do is click in the box to get the
flashing cursor bar, but he can't type. He can, however,
type the text he needs up in the Address bar and
copy/paste it into the text box. I can't find any
references to this. Also he can't do a system restore to
a previous date -- it tells him that it is unable to
restore from any of his previous dates.
