can't disable windows security alerts

Every time I restart my computer I get the windows security alert about virus
protection being unknown. I use symantec so can go to the recommendations
page and turn of monitoring. That is, I follow the directions described at:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/security/internet/sp2_disableavalerts.mspx

However, every time I restart the alert comes back (monitoring is turned
back on). This is basically only an annoyance but it seems there should be a
solution. And by the way, I have done the exact same thing on another
computer and don't have this problem. That is, monitoring stays off when I
restart.

What version of Norton are you running?
Did you manually click on "Live Update"?

I think if your Norton is up-to-date enough, there will be an option to
click after one of the updates that you click to fix the security center
problem (about the monitoring) and should help.

I'm using Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition and I did not manually click
on "Live Update". It updates automatically.

If you know that your computer's av is current and the definitions are
updated, then set Security Center not to alert you. Open the Security
Center applet from Control Panel and click on the link (on left side on
my boxen) that says, "Change how Security Center alerts me". Uncheck
the antivirus alerts.

Hi

If the "Change the Way Security Center Notifies Me" doesn't stick
when you reboot, you can disable the Security Center totally the
following way:

Start/Run --> services.msc

Find "Security Center" in the list, double click on it, set
"Startup type" to Disabled.
