Can't delete unwanted fonts

S

Win XP SP2 (Office Pro 2003 also installed)

Okay, I've read here that having a lot of fonts installed doesn't
do any particular harm to an XP system. But I want to remove the
many fonts I never use, to reduce the length of the font list that
pops up in applications.

In WINDOWS\FONTS I right-click an unwanted font file, drag it to
the Uninstalled folder and pick "Copy", then click it again and
select "Delete". That works for most of them; but some -- including
really large ones like Gulim, SimSun, and MingLiu -- say they can't
be uninstalled because they're in use.

I rebooted, and I don't have any apps running. I'm logged in as
administrator, and I still can't delete those fonts.

Help, please?

That might be because you have language support enabled for oriental
characters.. maybe somebody else knows for sure, but just a thought from my
end..

To delete a font, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

Note In Windows XP, click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click Fonts.
3. Click to select the font that you want to remove.

Note To select more than one font, hold down CTRL and then click each font
you want to remove.
4. On the File menu, click Delete.
5. Click Yes to the following message:

Are you sure you want to delete these fonts?

More in Help--just look up Fonts. You should not try to delete system fonts
that XP uses.

Mike, I think you've hit on it! I'm running as limited user right
now, and those settings in "Regional and Language Support" are
greyed but checked. I'll log in as Admin and try unchecking them,
then report back.

Mike, you hit the nail on the head! I turned off that support and
the unwanted huge fonts disappeared. Thanks!
