can't delete - this messaging interface returned an unknown error

I am running Office 2000 Prof Ed, on Windows XP.
I can't delete older emails from some folders in Outlook, keep getting the
'this messaging interface has returned an unkown error' message, tried moving
to another folder, and still the same error message, my deleted items folder
is empty, I've downloaded service pack 3 and all updates supposedly updated,
I've searched help files, and nothing seems to help!
Any ideas?
